Colorado’s tightest competition: Pumpkin growing

DENVER (KDV)R — It’s a tradition not only in the great outdoors of Colorado but around the free world. Growing giant pumpkins. The question is, why?

Wellington Colorado to giant pumpkin grower Brad Bledsoe is in a fierce back-and-forth with Chad New of Parker. First Bledsoe beat the record last month, then New passed him.

Brad vs. Chad: The battle to grow Colorado’s heaviest pumpkin is far from over

But how does one plump a pumpkin to such a preponderous proportion? Pricey pumpkin seeds and pour on the water.

“About 50 gallons in the morning and 50 gallons at night,” Bledsoe said.

Bledsoe is not even a farmer. He’s a firefighter with the Aurora Fire Department. He also doesn’t like pumpkins. He doesn’t like pumpkin pie. He won’t eat pumpkin seeds. On occasion, he may have a pumpkin latte at the local coffee shop, maybe.

Oct. 19 is the deadline for the competition, and Bledsoe may have one more chance at reclaiming the crown.
