What you should (and shouldn’t) do with leaves in your Fort Collins yard

Fall leaves changing color on trees are a treat to many, but once they’re on the ground, the trick is what to do with them.

There are plenty of options no matter where you land on the leaf spectrum.

Here are do’s and don’ts for handling leaves in the fall. You can find more information on the city of Fort Collins website .

Do this with leaves to benefit your landscaping

  • Lawns: Use a mulching lawnmower to chop up dry leaves into your lawn. Doing so will add compost. If you chose to aerate your lawn this fall, do that first, then mulch the leaves, which will help fill in the holes punched by the aerating.
  • Garden beds: Mulch leaves or rake them up and cover your vegetable garden beds to serve as compost or place them around perennials to provide insulation over the winter.
  • Compost: Dry brown leaves are an integral ingredient to successful composting. Visit the city’s website for more information on how to compost.
