Fossil Ridge volleyball handles home regional to make third straight 5A state tournament

This step was expected, but the next one is what this Fossil Ridge volleyball team has been waiting for.

The fifth-seeded SaberCats rolled through Rangeview and Rampart, going 2-0 to win Saturday’s Class 5A regional title.

Now it’s on to the 5A state tournament for a third straight season, this time with some major unfinished business after a runner-up finish last fall.

“I’m so excited,” said senior Erin Herrmann. “We’ve been waiting for this all year. It’s been the goal since that (match) ended last time.”

That match would be a heartbreaking five-set loss to Valor Christian in the 5A championship last November. The SaberCats (21-4) have already taken a measure of revenge, ending the Eagles’ 72-match win streak on their home floor last month .

It’s omnipresent for this team, which has responded with dominance this season, going 20-0 against Colorado competition. The only losses came to elite national squads at the Nike Tournament of Champions in Arizona.

The dominance continued Saturday, starting with a 25-10, 25-7, 25-7 bludgeoning of No. 32 Rangeview.
