A man shot by Fort Collins police while holding a woman pushing two small children in a stroller at gunpoint in a neighborhood west of Colorado State University in February was found guilty of kidnapping.
Last week, a jury found Colten Sirio, 33, guilty of three counts of first-degree kidnapping, a Class 2 felony; three counts of second-degree kidnapping, a Class 3 felony; and felony menacing, a Class 5 felony, according to online court records.
Sirio was shot by a Fort Collins police officer while holding a woman with two small children at gunpoint near the intersection of Springfield Drive and Southridge Drive the afternoon of Feb. 7. Eighth Judicial District Attorney Gordon McLaughlin determined the officer was legally justified in shooting Sirio following a Critical Incident Response Team investigation.
Sirio was on a walk with the woman and two children in the neighborhood west of CSU’s campus when a passerby called police to report they saw a man, later identified as Sirio, drop a gun on the sidewalk, pick it up and continue walking. When officers later located Sirio, the woman and children elsewhere in the neighborhood, Sirio pulled out the gun and held it to the woman’s side. Sirio reportedly made many statements to officers telling them to get away, including “don’t come near us” and “don’t (expletive) do this,” according McLaughlin’s decision letter and summary of the incident.
