A new Colorado law changes what’s needed to apply for a driver’s license

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) -A new Colorado Law will now make it easier to get a driver’s license by eliminating the need for a social security card.

“This is gonna be helpful for immigrants. It’s gonna allow them to participate more in society. It is a danger for everyone when we have uninsured motorists on the roads,” said Ernesto Walsh, Attorney at Abogado Ernesto.

In addition, this law alters requirements by:

  • Repealing the requirement that the applicant have filed a Colorado resident income tax return;
  • Repealing the requirement that the applicant have residency in Colorado state for the previous 2 years
  • Allowing an applicant to present a passport, consular identification card, or military identification document from the applicant’s country of origin that is unexpired or expired less than 10 years before the date of the applicant’s application for a driver’s license or identification document.

For some, concerns have risen for undocumented immigrants, who are a large beneficiary for this legislation. Some believe with all the recent ICE raids that authorities could use this to track people down or could start camping out at the DMV…
