Man fatally shot by police in Greeley

GREELEY, Colo. — A man was fatally shot by a Greeley police officer Wednesday afternoon after allegedly brandishing a knife and approaching the officer while refusing commands, according to a news release from the 19th Judicial Critical Incident Response Team, or CIRT.

Officers were dispatched around 2 p.m. to the 500 block of 16th Avenue after multiple reports of a man threatening people with a knife. Witnesses told police the man was walking west toward 21st Avenue.

An officer located the man near the 1900 block of 2nd Street, where he was seen swinging the knife at passing vehicles, investigators said. Despite repeated commands to drop the weapon, the man allegedly advanced on the officer, and that’s when the officer fired his weapon. Additional officers arrived and performed life-saving efforts until paramedics took over, but the man was pronounced dead at 2:25 p.m., the news release said…
