On May 4, the City of Fort Collins’ Historic Preservation Commission recognized several individuals who have made important contributions to local history and preservation with the Friend of Preservation Award:
- Fred Snyder and Cindy Jarvie, for faithful stewardship of the historic William and Eva Stroud House at 717 W. Olive St. Their ongoing care of this property has made the Stroud House an example of the importance of steady maintenance and careful craftsmanship in preserving the city’s important places.
- Suzanne LaViolette, for dedicated volunteerism through research of important places and people in Fort Collins. LaViolette’s research has helped city staff and community members better understand and care for the legacies of the Gellar Center (historically at 629 S. Howes St.), Washington Park and Sarah Corbin, one of the city’s most outspoken suffragists.
- Susan and Douglas Naffziger, for rehabilitation of the E.D. Ball House at 600 Mathews St. When faced with the challenge of a city floodplain, the Naffzigers chose to relocate and elevate the house while completing a rehabilitation of the house itself and surrounding grounds.
- Steve and Missy Levinger, for rehabilitation of the Scott Apartments at 900 S. College Ave. The Levingers have owned the Scott Apartment Building since 2003 and recently completed a complete rehabilitation of the building, leveraging state and federal historic tax credits. This is their second major rehabilitation of a Fort Collins Landmark, following the rehabilitation of The Armstrong Hotel in 2003.
The city acknowledges the role of historic property owners in maintaining designated historic process.
“We are grateful for the dedication of historic property owners who help steward these important resources for our city,” says Maren Bzdek, City of Fort Collins’ historic preservation manager.
