COLORADO, USA — As construction continues on the expansion of Interstate 25 between Mead and Berthoud, new data reveals a sharp increase in traffic crashes in the work zone.
Since May of last year, when the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) began the latest phase of its I-25 widening project, 111 crashes have occurred in the construction zone between Mead and Berthoud, according to data obtained from the Colorado State Patrol. That’s a significant rise from the 26 crashes reported in the same area the previous year. More specifically this is the area between Weld County Road 32 and Weld County Road 44.
The overall project, part of a long term effort to expand I-25 through northern Colorado, aims to ease congestion and accommodate rapid regional growth. The plan is for I-25 to eventually have an extra lane going northbound and southbound. This project isn’t expected to be complete until 2028…
