Fort Collins officials are doubling down on their no-tolerance policy for fireworks as the 4th of July approaches. A city statement reiterated that all fireworks, including sparklers and snake fireworks, are illegal to use, possess, or even store. Those caught in defiance could face a hefty $1,000 fine, as Fort Collins Police amp up patrol efforts in anticipation of the holiday, according to the City of Fort Collins.
With the safety stats standing as a stark testament to the danger, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that in the month around Independence Day, ERs see burns comprising about 38% of fireworks-related injuries, with children under 15 accounting for a quarter of these incidents. Hands and legs are most frequently injured, with eyes and other parts of the head making up another third. And, surprisingly, or not, sparklers are behind a worryingly high 29% of these injuries for the young ones.
