Retiree loses $2,000 in scam after attempting to sell old bike

LOVELAND, Colo. — Susan Whinery tried to sell an old bike for $100 and ended up giving $2,000 to someone posing as a buyer.

A consumer protection attorney warns her situation is an example of a growing problem – fraudsters turning to peer-to-peer payment platforms to carry out schemes.

Whinery contacted Steve On Your Side to share her story and prove that fraud can happen to anyone. The retired high school English teacher, who has bachelor’s and master’s degrees said she now realizes she missed many red flags and hopes her story is a lesson for others…
