Superior ‘monitoring’ after uranium found at Chimney Hollow Reservoir construction site

DENVER (KDVR) — Uranium has been found at the site of the Chimney Hollow Reservoir, which is currently under construction just west of Carter Lake in Larimer County.

The town of Superior, which is one of nine cities, two water districts and a power provider set to benefit from the Chimney Hollow Reservoir Project, announced Thursday that it is “monitoring water quality concerns” from the site.

Chimney Hollow Reservoir, which has been under construction since 2021, is being built to “help firm up water rights” for several municipalities that rely on raw water from the public agency Northern Water, according to Superior.

The town advised residents that it anticipates a need to treat for some level of uranium in the future, but said its water treatment plant is equipped to remove uranium levels “well below” the maximum contaminant level — the highest level of a contaminant allowed in drinking water…
