‘Heartbreaking destruction’: Wellington sees over $30K in park vandalism

DENVER (KDVR) — The town of Wellington has seen more than $30,000 in vandalism of local parks and playgrounds, including slides melted from arson and fireworks set off in public bathrooms. Now, the town is speaking out.

The Town of Wellington said in a social media post that parks have seen nightly vandalism over the past few months, with more than $30,000 in damage, “and growing.”

This damage includes ripped-down skatepark panels, motorized bikes that tore up grass, snapped trees, painted over playgrounds, slides melted from arson, broken warning lights and court equipment and trashed bathrooms. Inside the bathrooms, the town said partitions have been ripped off, soap dispensers were broken, trash cans and paper towels were set on fire and even fireworks were set off inside.

“During the past few months, our parks — places meant for kids to laugh, families to gather, and neighbors to connect — have become a nightly target for vandalism. And it’s not just ‘harmless fun.’ It’s destruction. Costly, frustrating, and heartbreaking destruction,” the town said.

The town said this vandalism is happening after the parks close at 10 p.m. Some amenities, like the bathrooms and splash pad at Wellington Community Park, close even earlier at 8 p.m.

“Let’s protect what makes Wellington great. Our parks should be a place to play, not for destruction. Let’s hold each other accountable. Our kids and our community deserve better,” the town said…
