Small plane pilot dies in Pawnee National Grasslands crash while flying from Idaho to Kansas

DENVER (KDVR) — The pilot of a small plane died in a crash on July 12 in the Pawnee National Grasslands, according to a preliminary crash investigation report released by the National Transportation Safety Board.

The preliminary report shared details from the pilot’s son, who told investigators his father’s airplane departed the Rexburg-Madison Airport in Idaho in the early morning of July 12 and landed at Central Wyoming Regional Airport to refuel. The plane, a two-seat kit airplane, departed the Wyoming airport and was en route to Goodland, Kansas, where he reportedly planned to spend the night.

The crash reportedly happened at about 12:50 p.m. on Saturday, July 12, in the Pawnee National Grasslands, located about 24 nautical miles northeast of the Greeley-Weld County Airport.

According to flight tracking data, the plane was primarily heading southeast when it turned south and began a descent during the last 90 seconds of recorded data, the NTSB reported. A witness at the crash site said the airplane “descended in a wings level and nose low attitude, and the engine was running at what sounded like a full throttle setting.”…
