A love for animals is not for the faint of heart. Much of the time, it takes hard work, dedication and the willingness to get dirty while caring for them.
The Bohren family has put in hard work not only with their variety of farm animals over many years, but also with the local agricultural community that surrounds them. That community, in turn, has recognized the Bohrens as this year’s Boulder County Fair Family. Melanie and Ben Bohren have two children, Alicia and Tyler, who grew up raising farm animals on their Longmont farm, Sugarbeet Farm.
“I was really surprised and felt very appreciative,” Melanie Bohren said. “It’s really nice to be recognized for all of the work that goes into it. When you volunteer, you do put a lot of time and energy into things you’re passionate about, and I’m passionate about the fair. So to be recognized for that is really special.”
The Bohrens have lived in Boulder County for over 30 years, but they weren’t originally in the agricultural business. Melanie was a project manager for a software development company for about 20 years, and her husband, Ben, is an engineer in the aerospace industry for Broomfield-based BAE Systems (formerly Ball Aerospace)…
