Great restaurants in Colorado do come and go; still, it’s rough to hear when one that has been around for so long will be going away.
In mid-August of 2025, Cables Pub & Grill at 59th Avenue and 20th Street in Greeley, announced that it would be closing its doors after over 50 years in business. Though their final location wasn’t the original one, Cables was legendary in Northern Colorado.

The original “Cables End” opened in 1972 in Greeley; it got its name because they had initially wanted to put it near the end of some large power cables. That didn’t happen, but they did stick with the “power line” theme.
Keith Johnson took over ownership of the restaurant in 1979, opening several other locations: Estes Park, Fort Collins, and Fort Morgan. I remember going to the Fort Collins location a few times, it’s now a Korean BBQ establishment. I have also been to the Cables Pub & Grill in Fort Morgan, which is great.

Keith Johnson moved the Greeley Cables to its final location in 2006; 14 years later, in 2020, Johnson passed away after battling cancer, according to the Greeley Tribune. I think many of us could understand how things just weren’t the same for the restaurant after Johnson’s passing.
Whether it was at the “old” location at 38th Avenue and 10th Street, or the new location, customers of Cables Pub & Grill have been huge fans. ‘Where Friends Meet” was their slogan, and it was true, for five decades…
