CSU study finds trees ‘hold their breath’ in wildfire smoke

FORT COLLINS, Colo. — Anyone who breathes already knows how bad wildfire smoke can be for our health.

Turns out, it’s bad for plants, too. Researchers at Colorado State University stumbled upon some interesting findings while working on a different project.

“Originally we went out to the Rocky Mountain forest to try and understand how plants emit volatile organic compounds,” said Delphine Farmer, a CSU chemistry professor and an atmospheric and indoor chemist. “Those are all those chemical compounds that make a pine forest smell like a pine forest.”…
