Fort Collins lab targets over 70 types of drugs to discover new threats and trends

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (KDVR) — A Fort Collins lab is using technology to get ahead of dangerous drugs infiltrating Colorado communities.

From machines spinning urine samples at 4,200 RPM, to technology with pumps and filters that break drugs down in people’s bodies, employees at Rocky Mountain Clinic’s Advanced Laboratory Solutions explained how they are able to detect drugs in urine with amounts as small as five nanograms, the equivalent of a grain of salt.

“These go after 77 targets,” Lab Manager John Spratlen explained while walking FOX31 through the different machines the team utilizes. “Drugs, not families, but the specific drugs. And in that 77 are a bunch of metabolites. So not only are we going after drugs, but we’re going after metabolites, the drug when it’s broken down through the body, the liver and the kidneys.”…
