Weld County sheriff warns of ‘ghost car’ scam that leads to victims accruing toll bills

DENVER (KDVR) — Scammers are at it again, targeting motorists to pay off mounting toll bills that someone else has fraudulently accrued.

The scam is being called “ghost cars” and involves a car that uses a cloned license plate to accrue toll fines.

The Weld County Sheriff’s Office advised residents of the scam through a social media post on Tuesday. The agency said that the scammers will duplicate valid license plates and install them on out-of-state vehicles.
