Greeley’s $1.1B entertainment district could be nixed under referendum

DENVER (KDVR) — Efforts to ensure residents have a chance to make their voice known in a $1.1 billion entertainment district project in Greeley have led to a successful referendum petition.

The project will bring an arena for the Colorado Eagles, a waterpark, apartments and retail space to the area, but many residents have argued they deserve a chance to have a say in the project as it will use taxpayer dollars.

Citizens successfully submitted a referendum petition on the project to the city, resulting in a temporary suspension of the planned unit development zoning district along Highway 34 and east of Weld County Road 17. That means the project will return before the city council, which could choose to repeal the ordinance establishing the project area.

If the city council chooses not to repeal the ordinance, the city will schedule a special election, and voters will choose whether to repeal the ordinance and stop the project permanently. The ordinance will remain suspended until the election is held…
