Longmont man faces charges after allegedly distributing fentanyl, resulting in death

DENVER (KDVR) — A man from Longmont is facing charges after allegedly distributing fentanyl, which resulted in the death of a victim, according to the 20th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

The district attorney’s office said Augustus Smith, 39, on Nov. 7 was arrested following an investigation into the death of Benjamin Raniewicz. Raniewicz was reportedly found dead outside of his residence in Erie on Aug. 8, 2024.

According to the district attorney’s office, a forensic pathologist conducted an autopsy and determined that Raniewicz had died due to complications of acute fentanyl toxicity.

Investigators had reviewed Raniewicz’s phone and found text message exchanges between him and Smith allegedly showing a history of drug transactions. In early August 2024, messages between the two men indicated that Smith had allegedly arranged for Raniewicz to pick up fentanyl from his Longmont residence on Aug. 6 at around 4:35 p.m., according to the district attorney’s office…
