Daniel Oliver McCarthy, 39, of Greeley, was arrested by Aurora Police earlier this week on child exploitation charges. The arrest occurred Wednesday after an investigation by the Internet Crimes Against Children Unit. McCarthy is accused of internet luring of a child and attempted sexual assault on a child. The 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office will file formal charges.
The case began with a two-day online operation in late March 2025. Agencies involved included the Boulder County District Attorney’s Office, Longmont Police, and Homeland Security Investigations. Investigators used social media ads to identify suspects. On March 29, McCarthy responded to an ad, believing he was talking to a 12-year-old girl.
Over the following eight months, McCarthy communicated with the undercover officer. He allegedly tried to convince the person to run away and live with him in Greeley. Police arrested McCarthy when he arrived at a meeting spot in Aurora. Officers found a loaded handgun in his vehicle…
