Longmont chooses not to renew Flock camera contract

LONGMONT, Colo. — The City of Longmont will soon stop using Flock automatic license plate reading cameras after citizens and council members criticized the company and its handling of driver location data.

After 90 minutes of public comment at Tuesday’s Longmont City Council meeting, council members voted to pause any contract extension talks, not pursue a new extension and to let the agreement expire in March with Flock. The 5-1 vote also requested the city’s public safety leaders explore an alternative option with similar effectiveness in solving crimes, and demanded that the city turn off data sharing with other cities beginning on Wednesday.
