Loveland, Colorado, was founded in 1877; it has seen many, many changes over its 150+ year history. In 2025, the city began changing things in Downtown, by improving infrastructure and sidewalks along a section of 4th Street. A clock that had stood on 4th Street since 1910 was removed due to the construction.
The clock has become an icon in Downtown: tall and proud, harkening back to when 4th Street was relatively young. The thought of it not being there would be saddening to many Lovelanders and visitors to The Sweetheart City. Sure, it didn’t really keep time all that well, but it’s a part of 4th Street’s history.

The clock, made in Pennsylvania (according to the Reporter-Herald) was installed in 1910, by a pair of brothers that owned a jewelry shop there at 239 4th Street. The clock base once held the weights that controlled the clock; those weights were removed years ago and replaced by an electrical cord that ran from under the street into the shop. Later, the clock was outfitted with battery power.
But, according to the Reporter-Herald, the clock stopped keeping time in 2018. The city owns that clock now, and have made several attempts at getting it to run correctly, but there aren’t that many people who know how to fix 100+ year-old clocks, anymore…
