Reckless Man in Crisis Self-Harmed During High-Risk Police Stop On Christmas Day in Longmont

A 25-year-old suspect was airlifted to a metro area hospital in critical condition on Christmas day after self-harming with a knife during a high-risk stop by a Longmont Public Safety Officer. The incident started at approximately 3 p.m. on December 25 when the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call from the man who was driving recklessly at the time. Multiple citizens also called 911 to report the man who was driving dangerously (over 100 miles per hour) through southwest Fort Collins, Loveland, and unincorporated Larimer County. The man was suspected of driving while impaired and was also suspected of causing a crash.

Larimer County deputies attempted to stop the vehicle in Loveland using tire spikes, but the driver continued out-of-sight. Deputies did not pursue the vehicle. Dispatch notified Longmont Public Safety that the man was traveling south on Highway 287 toward the Larimer/Boulder County line.

Longmont Public Safety found the damaged vehicle on State Highway 287 north of Vermillion Road and the vehicle had come to a stop. The authorities later learned that the vehicle had been in an accident with another vehicle just north of this location.
