Filmmaker’s premiere canceled after nearby 5-alarm fire forces theatre closure

DENVER — University of Northern Colorado senior Carlito Hale’s first feature film premiere was canceled Saturday morning after a massive five-alarm fire in a Denver apartment construction site created unsafe air quality conditions at the scheduled venue.

Hale received the news at 9 a.m. Saturday from the executive producer of the film, who informed him the Elaine Wolf Theatre could not host the premiere of “Pipedreem” due to excessive smoke in the air from the nearby fire.

“Literally, that first syllable of ‘canceled,’ I knew what he was going to say, and my heart dropped,” Hale said. “He said it was canceled, and I was silenced five minutes. I didn’t say anything.”…
