University of Northern Colorado Bears Bobblehead Unveiled

The UNC Bears bobbleheads, which are expected to ship in May, will be available in the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum’s online store. Each bobblehead will be individually numbered to only 2,026. The bobbleheads are $35 plus an $8 flat-rate shipping charge per order. The officially licensed bobbleheads are produced by the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum.

With a long history in teacher education, the University of Northern Colorado was founded in 1889 as the Colorado State Normal School. The bear became Northern Colorado’s mascot in 1923. Before the school adopted the bear, athletes used the nickname, “The Teachers.” The bear was said to be inspired by a bear on top of an Alaskan totem pole donated by an 1897 alumnus in 1914. The totem pole was kept in the University Center, but under the federal Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act of 1990, the pole was reclaimed by the Tlingit in 2003. The first and only live bear mascot the university adopted was Warden in 1926. Named after a vote by the students, Klawz became the newest addition to the long line of Bears costumed mascots when he made his first appearance at Nottingham Field on Aug. 30, 2003, before the UNC football team opened their season against the New Mexico Highlands. Klawz replaced Gunter the Bear, who was named after Gunter Hall on campus.

“We’re excited to be unveiling this new Northern Colorado bobblehead in conjunction with National Bobblehead Day,” says National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum co-founder and CEO Phil Sklar. “We know how passionate Northern Colorado alumni, fans, students, faculty and staff are about their school and bobbleheads, so we expect these bobbleheads to be extremely popular.”…
