DENVER (KDVR) — Colorado is seeing a spike in avian influenza after cases in domestic poultry flocks in just January this year are already nearing the total number of cases in all of 2025.
Lt. Gov. Dianne Primavera on Friday while serving as acting governor issued a disaster declaration for the latest reported case at a Weld County commercial egg-laying facility with more than 1.3 million chickens, but that is already the fourth case of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, also known as bird flu, in flocks reported this year. There were six cases in flocks in 2025.

A Denver metro city is also warning its residents after nearly a dozen wild bird cases within the last week.
“The confirmation of these new HPAI cases is a reminder that the virus is actively circulating in our state,” said Dr. Maggie Baldwin, Colorado State Veterinarian, in a situation update. “We urge all flock owners to remain highly vigilant, monitor their birds closely for any signs of illness, and, most critically, to immediately reinforce and practice strict biosecurity measures to protect their flocks.”…
