Ranger assaulted, suspect seriously injured at St. Vrain State Park near Longmont

A person suspected of assaulting a park ranger was seriously injured while being taken into custody at St. Vrain State Park on Sunday.

At about 12:25 p.m. the Colorado Parks and Wildlife ranger stopped a driver in the park whom he suspected was driving under the influence, according to a 19th Judicial Critical Incident Response Team news release. The driver did not follow commands, became aggressive and assaulted the ranger, who then used a stun gun to try to stun the driver, according to a Colorado Parks and Wildlife release. It didn’t work, and the ranger held the driver at gunpoint and called for backup. Dacono police, the Weld County Sheriff’s Office and Firestone police responded.

A Dacono officer used a stun gun, and the suspect fell backwards and hit his head. The suspect was treated and taken to a hospital where he is currently in serious condition, according to the CIRT release…
