Phoenix Weaponry leaves Berthoud for Rapid City

Phoenix Weaponry will leave Berthoud by July 31, moving to Rapid City, S.D., owner Aaron Cayce told the Surveyor. The company is Colorado’s largest arms manufacturer, and occupies about 10,000 square feet on Second Street.

Cayce marked the move out to increased property taxes and leasing costs, as well as higher licensing fees. But the biggest blow is a state law, passed last year and taking effect Aug. 1.

“After August 1, it will be illegal to manufacture semi-automatic, magazine-fed weapons in Colorado,” Cayce said. “That’s 40% of our revenue.”…
