Letter to the Editor: Mayor shares perspective on Revere Property ballot measures

Issues 1A and 3A concern the Revere property at the northwest corner of Mountain Avenue and U.S. Highway 287. I am sharing the following for context based on my experience serving on the Board of Trustees. These comments reflect my review of public meeting minutes recorded 18 to 20 years ago, as well as my own perspective.

In 2006, the town transitioned this property from transitional zoning into a Planned Unit Development (PUD), establishing its intended long-term use. At that time, agriculture was no longer considered viable, and the board identified the site—given its location at the intersection of two major highways—as well suited for commercial activity. Meeting minutes from that period describe intended uses as “commercial, office, retail, and entertainment.”

Over time, as ownership changed, the direction for the property appears to have drifted away from its original commercial intent. In 2024, a rezoning request came before the board and was not approved. Last fall, a revised proposal was approved by a majority of the board. Some trustees supported the updated plan, while others expressed concern about the reduction in commercial potential and the increase in residential use.
