Many people across Colorado love the idea of ghost towns; they can conjure up days of gold and lead mining, gunfights and whiskey. They can also conjure up sadness, in the fact the the town didn’t make it. There are six towns in Larimer County; are you familiar with them?
Information About a Small Town Leads to List of Ghost Towns
While doing some research in finding out how Campion got its name, I came across a list of ghost towns in Larimer County. I calculated that if you were to use Fort Collins as a starting point to visit each of the ghost town locations, you’d put about 300 miles on your vehicle.
Of course, you wouldn’t have to travel far at all from Fort Collins to visit where the ghost town of Stout used to be, as it’s at the bottom of Horsetooth Reservoir. While there are many, many people that Stout is under Horsetooth, you have to assume there are many water-skiers, angles and such that do not.
I think it would make for a fun project: Traveling to the six locations and getting some photos to put on canvases that you could hang in your home. Make it a celebration of Colorado history and show off your photography skills. I would say black-and-white would be the way to go…
