WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — South Florida is heading into a wetter stretch of weather, with scattered thunderstorms today capable of producing heavy rainfall and localized flooding before rain chances increase even more through the middle of next week.
Today’s storms will be driven by the afternoon sea breeze, but unlike the past several days, lighter winds in the atmosphere will allow thunderstorms to develop across a larger portion of the region, including the east coast metro. Storms are expected to become most numerous during the afternoon and early evening before gradually diminishing tonight.
The biggest concern will be heavyrainfall. The atmosphere contains plenty of moisture, allowing thunderstorms to produce very heavy rain in a short amount of time. Because storms will move more slowly, isolated urban and poor-drainage flooding is possible, especially in areas that receive repeated rounds of rain.
A few stronger storms could also produce wind gusts between 40 and 50 mph along with frequent cloud-to-ground lightning, but widespread severe weather is not expected…
