Ken Griffin closed on his purchase of Mana Wynwood for $1.1 billion, a deal that had been in the works for well over a year, according to The Real Deal. Alongside the closing, Griffin and Carnegie Mellon University announced plans to build a satellite campus on more than 35 acres of the Wynwood site, funded through a $3 billion gift Griffin made to the university, confirmed directly in Carnegie Mellon’s own announcement. Carnegie Mellon called it the largest single-donor gift in the history of higher education.
The gift structure is worth being precise about, since the real estate purchase and the philanthropic commitment aren’t simply two separate, additive numbers stacked on top of each other. Of the $3 billion total, $1 billion supports Carnegie Mellon’s original Pittsburgh campus, split between flexible university priorities and a $500 million investment renaming its top-ranked School of Computer Science after Griffin. The remaining $2 billion funds the new Miami campus, and according to Refresh Miami’s reporting, that $2 billion figure specifically includes the value of the Wynwood land Griffin purchased from Mana. In other words, the real estate deal is functioning as a substantial component of the philanthropic gift itself, not a separate transaction Griffin made on the side.
On the construction question, Carnegie Mellon University Miami is expected to break ground in 2027 and begin enrolling students in 2028, per Refresh Miami, eventually supporting more than 3,500 undergraduate, master’s and PhD students alongside roughly 300 faculty and 600 staff, according to Carnegie Mellon’s own materials. The university’s release includes a standard but real caveat: the plans remain “subject to necessary regulatory approvals.” Rather than organizing around traditional academic departments, CMU Miami is planned to center its teaching and research on specific challenges, including human health, national security, energy and climate resilience, and advanced manufacturing, with dedicated space for industry research labs and venture studios…
