A November murder near the Miami airport was carried out by a member of the notorious Tren de Aragua gang, police say
One of Latin America’s most violent and bloodthirsty gangs has been active in South Florida, according to local authorities who believe at least one member was been involved in a Miami murder last year.
Retired Venezuelan police officer José Luis Sánchez Valera, 43, of Doral, was lured into a Miami hotel room by an unidentified woman in November. He was then allegedly killed by Yurwin Salazar, 23, who had immigrated to the U.S. from Venezuela, according to The Miami Herald .
Salazar is known to police as a member of Tren de Aragua, one of the largest criminal syndicates in Venezuela. The gang, which is some 3,000 strong, has also expanded its reach across Latin America into countries including Chile and Peru .
Salazar was arrested last week and faces a slew of charges including murder, armed home invasion, and kidnapping. He is being held without bond.
