Beryl forms, expected to be major hurricane in Windwards as heat scorches South Florida

South Florida weather was sizzling this weekend with above-normal heat and an eye on the tropics, where the National Hurricane Center is predicting that Tropical Storm Beryl will become a major hurricane as it reaches the Windward Islands late Sunday or early Monday.

Beryl, which reached tropical storm status late Friday, was rapidly strengthening into a hurricane Saturday and on a path that would take it into the Windwards. A hurricane watch was in effect Saturday for Barbados and much of the Windwards, and the NHC was predicting a path that would take the cyclone over Jamaica late Wednesday or early Thursday.

There is no immediate threat to the United States or Florida from the tropical disturbances, but excessive heat was in the forecast. The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory Saturday for Monroe, Miami-Dade and Broward counties on the east, and Collier County on the west. The “feels like” temperature in Collier on Saturday was expected to reach 110 degrees.

“For Sunday, we still have time to check on upcoming guidance and decide depending on how the forecast evolves,” aid Anthony Reynes, a meteorologist in the Miami office of the National Weather Service.
