Bye-Bye Badcock: A SW Florida staple for a century, another piece of history disappearing

Another piece of history will disappear from Southwest Florida with the upcoming closings of Badcock Furniture, a Sunshine State staple since 1904.

Some of you believed maybe it had disappeared long ago, lost in the furniture frenzy of fresher chains running the show these days, based on thoughts you shared with me or on our company’s social media pages that include the Facebook sites for The News-Press and the Naples Daily News.

“With stores popping up like City Furniture, and Rooms to Go, there’s no way they could survive,” said reader Tina Marie. “You can walk into City Furniture and buy a whole house of furniture for what it would cost to buy one living room suite at Badcock furniture.”

“You can blame people buying from online instead of going to stores,” reader Roger Looney said. “A person has many choices of different stores and prices to pick from. Still, it comes down to people would rather buy online than go to the stores and buy. If people don’t go to the stores, the stores can’t make money or pay the employees, no matter what’s being sold.
