21-year-old woman known as ‘bright light’ killed in Pompano Beach crash, BSO investigating

A 21-year-old woman was killed in a car crash in Pompano Beach that Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies are investigating.

At about 8:15 p.m. Oct. 4, Jose Garcia Peleaz, 23, was driving a 2008 Ford Mustang eastbound on West Atlantic Boulevard within the 2300 block when he T-boned into a 2011 Chevrolet Malibu driven by Chris Cherenfant.

Cherenfant, whose age was not given by BSO, was traveling westbound on West Atlantic Boulevard and trying to make a left turn onto Walmart Drive, BSO said in a Tuesday press release.

The Mustang continued traveling eastbound and then rolled over, causing a passenger, Margarita Ortuno Cruz, to be ejected. BSO did not say how fast the Mustang was going or give an age for Cruz.

Paramedics transported Cruz to Broward Health North, where she died.

A gofundme page identifies Cruz as 21 and a “bright light in the lives of everyone she met.”

“She was a passionate friend, a devoted family member, and a source of joy for everyone fortunate enough to know her,” wrote Laura Ortuno.
