Bicyclist Fatally Struck After Bypassing Train Crossing Arms in Pompano Beach

Broward Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit detectives are investigating an incident in which a bicyclist was struck and killed by a Brightline train after bypassing the lowered crossing arms.

The fatal collision occurred around 1:35 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2024, in the 300 block of North Dixie Highway. According to investigators, the adult male bicyclist attempted to maneuver around the lowered crossing arms at the Hammondville Road crossing as a northbound Brightline train approached.

Despite the functioning warning signals and barriers, the cyclist entered the train’s path and was struck. The impact caused the bicyclist to be thrown from the bike, where he then struck a nearby 2010 Toyota Corolla and became lodged underneath the vehicle. Emergency responders extracted the individual, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses confirmed that all safety signals were operational during the time of the crash. The investigation remains ongoing.
