An eatery from the past: Lum’s is memorable for its steamed hot dogs in beer and its Ollie Burger

Lum’s was a family chain restaurant founded in Miami Beach, Florida in 1956 by brothers, Clifford S. “Cliff” Perlman (1926-2016) and Stuart Perlman.

Clifford was an entrepreneur who later became the Chairman and CEO of Caesars World, Inc. for over 10 years. Stuart also found success in real estate.

The Perlman story began when they bought a small bar in Miami Beach known for its hot dogs steamed in beer. It was called Lum’s. By 1961, it had grown into four locations.

The Perlman brothers worked on the expansion and franchising of the brand. In 1969, Lum’s, Inc. became publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange. Also during that year, Lum’s, Inc. acquired Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. That was when Caesars was only a 500-room hotel and casino.

During Perlman’s tenure at the hotel, the hotel was a success, and many more rooms were added. He was the first to introduce live sports and boxing to Las Vegas.

Under Perlman’s tenure the hotel gaming casino became the anchor that built up the Las Vegas Strip growing from 550 rooms to 1,750. (Source.)
