An upstate New York man was sentenced to two years in prison and 10 years of probation after pleading guilty to causing a crash that killed a Weston mom on a bicycle three years ago.
Oion Johnson, 27, admitted that he came to South Florida in May 2021 to celebrate a friend’s birthday and had barely slept in the 36 hours leading up to the accident . He pleaded guilty in August to vehicular homicide and reckless driving causing property damage.
His sentence was part of a negotiated agreement. Vehicular homicide carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison. Family members of the victim, Sunny LaValle, were consulted about the negotiations before the plea, and Broward Circuit Judge Michael Usan told attorneys that the sentence would likely be the same if Johnson were to be convicted at trial.
In addition to the prison and probation, Johnson will lose his license to drive for five years and has to submit to random drug testing once a month for the duration of his probation. He is not permitted to use any non-prescribed drugs.
