She turned 10 last week. A stray bullet killed her on Jan. 1, Miami-Dade police say

Someone ignoring the annual warnings about firing bullets into the air to celebrate New Year’s Day killed a girl, Miami-Dade police say.

The child’s name was Yaneliz Munguia. She just turned 10 years old on Thursday.

Early investigation says Yaneliz “was struck by a stray bullet fired into the air from an unknown location by an unknown subject,” Miami-Dade police said.

According to police, Yaneliz was at New Year’s Eve/New Year’s Day celebrations with family at 2152 NW 27th Ave. when she collapsed around 1:30 a.m. Family members found she’d been shot in the back of her head. Her mother and father got her in a car and began looking for a hospital while calling 911.

They were at Palm Avenue and West Third Street in Hialeah when Hialeah Fire Rescue caught up with them and took Yaneliz to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Anyone who knows anything should contact Crime Stoppers of Miami-Dade & the Florida Keys, either online or at 305-471-8477 (TIPS).
