Tom Murphy thought he’d found his forever home.
He was wrong.
A retired New York cop, Murphy moved to Fort Lauderdale nearly four years ago, plunking down $409,000 for a waterfront condo in Fort Lauderdale overlooking the Intracoastal.
Now the entire 18-unit building he once called home is up for sale.
Here’s why: The owners say they can’t afford millions in repairs to make it safe.
In late September, residents at Springbrook Gardens were told they had 48 hours to move out of their aging condo at 125 N. Birch Road .
The building’s engineer of record had issued a dire warning : The western foundation of the four-story structure, built in 1947, had progressive deterioration that made the building no longer safe.
Looking for a second opinion, the condo association quickly hired a second engineer.
Five days later, the residents were allowed to move back in after agreeing to make emergency repairs.
Murphy, president of the condo association, said he started calling contractors and was told it would cost more than $4 million to make a temporary fix.
