At the Humane Society of Broward County in Florida, Penelope’s family never came for her. She was found roaming the streets as a stray, but the good news – or so everyone thought, the two-year-old very friendly pooch had a microchip.
If you’re a regular reader of Pet Rescue Report, then you know how we emphasize the need for all pet owners to have their pets microchipped. It is estimated that one in three pets will go missing at some point in their lives. Dogs with microchips are more than twice as likely to be returned to their owners, and cats are up to 21 times more likely to make it home if microchipped.
We are so saddened however to report, that even though Penelope was microchipped, her family never came to the shelter for her. She’s just heartbroken. She looks at the staff and volunteers with the saddest eyes, as if pleading to know what she did wrong that her family no longer wants her…
