Fort Lauderdale residents can expect a change in their weekday commute as the city aligns efforts with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and the U.S. Coast Guard to test out a new schedule for the SE 17th Street Bridge aimed at mitigating rush-hour traffic snarls. Starting from June 2 and continuing until November 28, the bridge will have restricted openings at peak travel times on weekdays, the city announced.
According to the City of Fort Lauderdale’s press release, the trial timetable restricts the bridge’s usual operations during morning and afternoon high traffic periods; it will no longer open at 7:30 a.m., 8:30 a.m., 4:30 p.m., and 5:30 p.m., a decision designed to calm the often congested tides of commuting vehicles that flood this arterial passage and however there’s hope that this might present a long-term viable option if this stint proves successful in easing the vehicular flow.
No alterations are scheduled for weekends or federal holidays, with the bridge functioning at its regular rhythm, opening every 30 minutes.
