This Hidden Florida Preserve Sends Ocean Spray Flying Through Ancient Limestone Formations at High Tide

There’s a place on Florida’s east coast where the ocean doesn’t just meet the shore—it erupts through it. Welcome to Blowing Rocks Preserve, a stretch of wild, wave-battered coastline in Hobe Sound where Atlantic swells surge through ancient limestone crevices, sending salty spray high into the air like a natural geyser show.

If you’ve never seen water shoot ten feet skyward from the earth’s surface, you’re in for a jaw-dropping surprise. And if you’re into nature walks, sea turtle spotting, or just escaping the noise for a little while, Blowing Rocks Preserve is a peaceful, dramatic, and totally unexpected slice of coastal Florida.

What We Love

The “Blowholes” in Action
This preserve’s star attraction is the rare Anastasia limestone shoreline—jagged, pocked with blowholes, and absolutely mesmerizing during high tide. When the waves roll in just right, seawater rockets skyward through the rocks like nature’s own water feature. It’s thrilling, noisy, and totally worth timing your visit around.

A Beach That Feels Prehistoric
Forget sugary white sand—here, you’re walking on rock shelves sculpted by centuries of wave action. It’s dramatic, raw, and a far cry from the typical Florida beach. Bring sturdy shoes and explore tide pools filled with tiny crabs and seaweed curls.

Sea Turtles and Shorebirds
From May to October, Blowing Rocks becomes a nesting ground for loggerhead, green, and leatherback sea turtles. While the nests are protected, you might glimpse a mama turtle on an early morning walk or spot hatchlings (if you’re lucky!). Year-round, you’ll see pelicans coasting overhead and sandpipers scuttling through the foam.

Scenic Nature Trails
Beyond the rocks, a boardwalk trail winds through sea grape groves and coastal hammocks, leading to educational kiosks and shaded benches. It’s great for a leisurely walk with ocean breezes and glimpses of gopher tortoises if you keep your eyes peeled.

Atmosphere & Setting

Blowing Rocks has a kind of ancient drama to it—especially on stormy days when the sea is loud and crashing. But even under sunny skies, the vibe is calm, raw, and respectfully quiet. There’s no blaring music or souvenir stands—just the sound of wind in the palms, waves pounding against limestone, and the occasional call of a gull. The preserve feels both rugged and protected, a blend of untouched coastline and gentle walking paths framed by thick greenery.

Value (Is It Worth It?)

Absolutely. Entry is just a suggested $2 per person donation, making it one of the most affordable natural experiences in South Florida. Expect to spend 1–2 hours exploring the beach and trails, more if you’re taking your time or catching a wildlife talk. It’s a great option for nature lovers, photographers, couples, or families with kids who enjoy the outdoors (and don’t mind skipping the sandcastles for something wilder).

Other Considerations

Parking is limited but free, and the preserve is open Wednesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The terrain near the rocks is uneven and slippery, so wear appropriate shoes and use caution—especially at high tide. There are no lifeguards, and swimming isn’t recommended due to the rocky shoreline. Bring water, sunscreen, and bug spray if you’re exploring the inland trails. There are clean restrooms and a few shaded picnic spots, but no food services on site—so plan to eat before or pack a cooler.

If you’re craving a wilder, more elemental version of Florida’s coast—where every crashing wave feels like a little burst of adventure—Blowing Rocks Preserve is calling your name. Come for the spray, stay for the stillness, and leave with a little more awe in your step.
