Boca Raton man among 324 charged in record $14.6B national health care fraud crackdown

BOCA RATON, Fla. (CBS12) — A Boca Raton man is facing charges in what officials call the biggest health care fraud bust in U.S. history.

Richard Weldon Crowder II is among 324 people charged nationwide in what federal officials are calling the largest healthcare fraud takedown in U.S. history. The sweeping enforcement action, announced Monday by the Department of Justice (DOJ), targets schemes that allegedly defrauded Medicare, Medicaid, and other programs of more than $14.6 billion.

Crowder, 59, of Boca Raton, was charged with conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud, according to the DOJ. Prosecutors allege he secretly owned and operated three medical supply companies — New Day Health Solutions, Liberty Medical Supply, and RNK Medical Supply Inc. — and used them to bill Medicare for medically unnecessary durable medical equipment (DME)…
