A man was arrested and charged with felony battery after allegedly attacking an 81-year-old man outside the food court of Coral Square Mall.

According to a Coral Springs Police Department arrest report, Thomas John Gleason, 47, of Fort Lauderdale, was arrested on July 8 following an investigation into an incident that occurred on June 10 outside the mall’s food court.

Police say the senior victim and his family discovered a black bag abandoned on a trash can and were inspecting it to determine its owner when Gleason allegedly charged at the man, yelling and then violently pushing him to the ground. The victim’s head struck the concrete, resulting in an injury and serious swelling.

Witnesses – including the victim’s wife and adult son – told officers that Gleason fled on foot. Surveillance footage later obtained from the mall showed a balding white male in a light blue shirt, black pants, and glasses matching the family’s description leaving the scene in the direction of the mall’s main entrance…
