In South Florida, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) has announced an extensive campaign to combat illegal gun trafficking, a move prompted by a spike in gun violence in the region. The “Don’t Lie for the Other Guy” campaign, now in its 25th year, aims to raise awareness about the penalties awaiting those convicted of unlawful firearm purchases. A collaborative effort between the ATF and organizations including the U.S. Attorney’s Office of Southern District of Florida, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, and the National Shooting Sports Foundation, the campaign highlights that illegal purchasers may face up to 15 years in prison, and fines up to $250,000. Local firearm sellers are playing a critical role in this initiative.
