Miami man driving truck meant to absorb impact of crashes dies in crash

BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — The Florida Highway Patrol said a man driving a truck designed to minimize the impact of crashes was killed in a crash that occurred in the early-morning hours of Saturday.

At around 1:30 a.m., on southbound I-75 in Broward County, a truck was painting lines on the roadway and shoulder, moving at a slow speed. Behind the truck was a Scorpion Crash Truck, a specially designed vehicle that includes a crumple zone to absorb the impact of a crash and protect highway workers.

A third vehicle, a pick-up truck towing a boat, was coming up behind the workers and failed to slow down in time, colliding with the back of the Scorpion truck.

The force of the crash pushed the Scorpion truck into the truck in front of it, and the driver sustained severe injuries. The 64-year-old Miami man was airlifted to a nearby hospital, where he died of his injuries…
