A Miami woman who allegedly posed as an immigration officer while stealing thousands of dollars from people seeking U.S. citizenship has been arrested, authorities said.
Maria Van-Caneghem, 51, was arrested Wednesday on charges of organized scheme to defraud and grand theft, Miami-Dade jail records showed.
According to an arrest report, a Miami Beach woman had been introduced to Van-Caneghem through a mutual friend who said she was in the process of obtaining U.S. citizenship with Van-Caneghem’s assistance.
The Miami Beach woman contacted Van-Caneghem to request help with her citizenship, and Van-Caneghem told her she was an immigration officer and could help her for a fee, and the victim paid Van-Caneghem $3,000 through Zelle, the report said…
